Microsoft Word Lab Example

Inserting and Formatting Charts

Practice Exercise

In this exercise, you will insert a chart. You will then modify the appearance of a chart by changing the chart type, the size, the color of the plot area, and the legend.

  1. USE the InsertChart document in the My Documents\Microsoft Press\MOS 2003 Study Guide\Word\W03C-1-5 practice file folder.
  2. Open the InsertChart document. Move to the end of the document.
  3. Insert a chart. Drag the title bar of the datasheet window so that the window is positioned below the sample chart. Then delete the contents of the datasheet.
  4. Type row headings for Week 1 through Week 4 and column headings for Morning, Early Afternoon, and Evening. Widen column B to fit its entry. Type the data shown in the Table 1 (shown below) into the chart’s datasheet:
  5. On Graph’s Standard toolbar, click the View Datasheet button to hide the datasheet. Then change the chart type to a line chart.
  6. Drag the chart area’s handles so that its right frame roughly aligns with the 6-inch mark on the horizontal ruler and its bottom frame roughly aligns with the 7 1/2-inch mark on the vertical ruler. Click the plot area—the gray area of the chart—to select it, and use the Fill Color button on the Standard toolbar to change the background of the chart to light green.
  7. Remove the horizontal gridlines from the chart. Then give the chart the title Customer Transactions, and move the legend to the bottom of the chart area. Change the font size of the legend to 10 points.
  8. Then put a border around the entire chart area, and make any other formatting adjustments you feel are necessary. Click outside the chart to deselect it, and after admiring your handiwork, close the InsertChart document without saving it.
